    Letter for the week of March 16, 2020    
     
    Science - Gross/Hottenrott and Science - Spicer/Fanelli - We have moved on to a new unit entitled "Changing Earth".  We will begin to look at how volcanoes and earthquakes can change Earth's surface. We have started to learn about rocks including the three categories of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. In addition we are learning about and performing activities with weathering, erosion, and deposition. Also, we have been researching deltas, sea arches, and solution caves which are created by weathering, erosion, and deposition.  Scientists examine fossils to learn about Earth's past. The students will make their own fossils to bring the past "to life"!
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will have our chapter test on decimals on Thurs., 3/19.  Then we will begin our chapter on area and perimeter.
     
    Letter for the week of March 9, 2020    
     
    Science - Gross/Hottenrott and Science - Spicer/Fanelli - We have moved on to a new unit entitled "Changing Earth".  We will begin to look at how volcanoes and earthquakes can change Earth's surface.     Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will continue to study decimals and work with tenths and hundredths. In addition, we will relate fractions to decimals as well as compare decimals.

In addition we are learning about and performing activities with weathering, erosion, and deposition. Lastly, we have been experimenting with building model dams.  We are truly engineers!
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like denominators as well as multiply fractions by whole numbers.

    Science - Gross/Hottenrott and Science - Spicer/Fanelli - We have moved on to a new unit entitled "Changing Earth".  We will learn about the layers of the Earth: core, mantle, and crust.  In addition, we will begin to look at how volcanoes and earthquakes can change Earth's surface. We have started to learn about rocks including the three categories of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary. In addition we are learning about and performing activities with weathering, erosion, and deposition. Lastly, we have been experimenting with building model dams.  We are truly engineers!
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will work with mixed numbers and improper fractions.  We will complete our study guides for Chapter 8, and the Chapter 8 test will be on Friday, February 21.

    Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will work with the order of operations, PEMDAS.  We will complete our study guides, and the chapter test will be the week of Feb. 3.

    Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will work with sequences, patterns that follow addition and subtraction rules, as well as patterns that follow multiplication and division rules.

    Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will have our Chapter 6 test on Tues., Jan. 14.  Students will take the winter STAR assessment on Wed., Jan. 15.  We will finish the week working with nonnumeric and numeric patterns.

    Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will complete our chapter on long division.  You can help your child with this skill because we still use the traditional algorithm.  The test on this chapter will be the week of January 13, 2020.

    Math - Gross and Math - Spicer -  We will solve division problems using the traditional algorithm.  We will also interpret remainders for those division problems.

    This is the last weekly letter for the 2018-2019 school year!  It is always a bittersweet time. We will miss seeing and working with our students every day, but we will also enjoy the extra time to spend with our families, friends, and pets.  This week we'll watch Shiloh, create stained glass, play some games, and sign some yearbooks.  Thank you for all you have done to make this year a successful and enjoyable one.  Happy Summer!

    Science - Gross/Hottenrott and Science - Cicchini/Dougherty - We have begun a new unit, "Plant and Animal Structures".  Students have been researching seeds, flowers, and leaves to see how these structures vary from organism to organism. We will continue to learn about our senses. 
     
     
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  Students will begin a Bedroom Builder project dealing with area and perimeter.  Students will finish the week by creating their own math games.

    Science - Gross/Hottenrott and Science - Cicchini/Dougherty - We have begun a new unit, "Plant and Animal Structures".  We will take some time to research the functions of some of our own internal organs.  Furthermore, we have looked at real maple tree seeds, sweet gum tree seed pods, daffodil bulbs, and tulip bulbs. Students have been researching seeds, flowers, and leaves to see how these structures vary from organism to organism. In addition, we will begin to learn about our senses. In particular, we will learn about the eye, its parts and the functions of these parts.
     
     
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  Students will use their knowledge of geometry to design a dream house.  Later in the week, students will begin a Bedroom Builder project dealing with area and perimeter.

    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  We will have our final STAR Math on Mon., 5/20.  We will complete our study guides for our chapter on customary measurement.  The test on customary measurement will be Thurs., 5/23.  Students will be able to use their rulers and blue cards for the test.

We have been learning about vertebrates, invertebrates, exoskeletons, and endoskeletons.  We will even dissect a squid to see some of these structures we have been learning about!  In addition, we took some time to research the functions of some of our own internal organs.  Furthermore, we have looked at real maple tree seeds, sweet gum tree seed pods, daffodil bulbs, and tulip bulbs.
     
     
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  We will work with customary units of length, capacity, and weight.  We will work with conversions too such as 3 tons = 6,000 pounds and 48 inches = 4 feet.

    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  We will have our test on our geometry chapter on Tues., 4/23.  Then we will learn about metric units for length, capacity, and mass.

    Science - Gross/Hottenrott and Science - Cicchini/Dougherty - We have begun a new unit, "Plant and Animal Structures".  We will look at what organisms need to survive and what adaptations they have made that enable them to be successful in their environments. We will experiment with seeds to see what they truly need to germinate.  Students have been researching internal and external structures that help organisms survive in their specific environments. We have been learning about vertebrates, invertebrates, exoskeletons, and endoskeletons.  We will even dissect a squid to see some of these structures we have been learning about!
     
     
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  We will be working with quadrilaterals and symmetry.  We will complete our study guides for this chapter on geometry, and the test on this chapter will be the week we return from Spring Break.

    Science - Gross/Hottenrott and Science - Cicchini/Dougherty - We will continue with our unit on "Changing Earth".  Students will research a landform of their choice, build a model of that landform from clay, and share their landform and research with their classmates. Mrs. Cicchini and Mrs. Dougherty's class will begin a new unit, "Plant and Animal Structures".  We will look at what organisms need to survive and what adaptations they have made that enable them to be successful in their environments. We will experiment with seeds to see what they truly need to germinate.  Students have been researching internal and external structures that help organisms survive in their specific environments.
     
     
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  We will be working with angles and triangles.  Geometry!

Students will create a presentation to share what they have learned from their experiment.  Then we will start our new unit on "Changing Earth".
     
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  We'll work with the traditional algorithm for multiplying two-digits by two-digits. We'll apply this knowledge to solve word problems. We'll finish the week by completing our study guides.  The test on this chapter will be next week. 
     
    This week, we will have a special guest speaker, Dr. Sarah Bauer, from Rowan University.  She will talk to us about alternative energy and renewable sources of energy.

Students have been researching this topic on their Chromebooks and creating Google slides.
     
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  We will be looking at multiplication as a comparison, multiplication properties, division rules, the associative property of multiplication, and factors and multiples.

    Science - Gross/Hottenrott and Science - Cicchini/Dougherty - Our unit is "Energy".  In this unit, we will look at where energy comes from as well as how we use it.  We looked at sound waves as they are used in Morse code.  We'll also look at waves as they relate to water.  
     
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  The test on Chapter 2 will be Wed., 10/10.  Then we will move on to the relationship between multiplication and division and see how division is repeated subtraction.

    Math - Gross and Math - Cicchini -  This week students will work with subtraction. In addition, we'll problem solve by drawing a diagram and solve multi-step word problems.  The test on Chapter 2 will be the week of October 8.

Next, we will look at addition properties and subtraction rules.  Then, we'll look at addition and subtraction patterns as well as estimating sums and differences.  We'll end our week by adding whole numbers.

    This is the last weekly letter for the 2017-2018 school year!  It is always a bittersweet time. We will miss seeing and working with our students every day, but we will also enjoy the extra time to spend with our families, friends, and pets.  This week we'll have the students present the Google slides they created for the Newton's Laws activity, we'll play some games, and sign some yearbooks.  Thank you for all you have done to make this year a successful and enjoyable one.  Happy Summer! 
     
    We would like to thank all of our Partners in Learning for allowing us the privilege to work with your children. We appreciate all of the support that you have given your children and us throughout the year. We would also like to recognize our fantastic room parents.     For the last full week of school, we will be completing a variety of activities.  The students will finish the Math games they began creating last month, and they will have the opportunity to play them.  We'll also learn some NJ history by playing some games.  In Science, students will research a topic of their choice and share what they learned with their classmates.  In addition, we will create translucent stained glass windows from opaque paper.  Ms. Gross and Mrs. Hottenrott's homeroom will finish the week by watching Shiloh which was our first read aloud book in September. 
     
     
      
    Letter for the week of May 7, 2018   
     
    Beginning on May 9, and concluding on May 17, our class will be taking the PARCC test in the mornings.
     
      
    Science - Savas/Dougherty-  In Science, the students are doing a wonderful job with their car/ramp experiment seeing Newton's Laws in action.  This week, we will take the experiment a step further, by having the students use materials of their choice to accelerate or decelerate their car.
     
     
    Science - Gross/Hottenrott - For our Science unit, we will perform some activities to see refraction in action. We'll also look at reflection as well as watch a video on light and color. Students will research inventions that use light and write about an invention they would like to create that uses light. 
      
       
    Math - Gross and Math - Savas -  We will draw and classify angles in addition to drawing and identifying lines of symmetry.

    ELA -  Students will work in literature circles as a group to create a poster about a story from our anthology that we have not read this year.  The poster will include a summary, interesting vocabulary, illustrations, and 'what if .... ' questions to extend their thoughts concerning the story. 
     
       
    Writing and Grammar -  Students will complete and share their tall tales.  There will be a grammar quiz on 'good' and 'bad' on Wed., 6/14.
     
     
    Social Studies - We'll take a closer look at the Statue of Liberty, the Star Spangled Banner, and the Bald Eagle. We'll also discuss what are the responsibilities of being a citizen.  We'll also learn about Flag Day.
       
    Math -  We'll work with converting customary units of weight and time.  In addition, we'll work with line plots.

    ELA -  Our skill for this week is 'cause and effect'. We'll also be working with homographs to figure out the meaning of unknown words. Our genre of the week is 'tall tale'. There will be a quiz on the vocabulary words on Thurs., 6/8.
     
       
    Writing and Grammar -  Students will be writing their own tall tales.  There will be a grammar quiz on 'more' and 'most' on Wed., 6/7.

    ELA - Our skills this week are 'making predictions' and 'sequence/plot'.  We'll also work with synonyms.  Our genre of the week is fairy tales.  We are doing very well establishing our rules and procedures for Daily 5. 
     
    Writing and Grammar -  In Grammar, we will work with sentences/fragments as well as the four types of sentences.  There will be a quiz on this on Tues., 9/13.  In Writing, we will continue developing our writing community.  We'll brainstorm ideas and develop some narratives.
     
    Science -  We'll be working with tools to measure, handle, and observe objects.  We'll also be working with non-standard measurement as well as inquiry skills. 
      
       
    Math -  We'll order numbers, round numbers, and work with word problems. There will be a quiz on lessons 1-4 on Wed., 9/14.
